Lapis Lazuli: the colour of the night sky
Lapis lazuli is a mesmerising gemstone that has captured the hearts of many for centuries. It's deep royal blue colour and solid blue composition have made it a sought-after stone for jewellery, art, and even historical artefacts. Its beauty and significance have been documented in various sources, making it a true treasure of the Earth. The alluring blue hue of lapis lazuli has been compared to the colour of the night sky, evoking a sense of mystery and wonder. Its name actually comes from the Latin word "lapis" meaning stone and the Persian word "lazhuward" meaning blue. This stunning gemstone has been highly valued since ancient times and was even used by the ancient Egyptians in the famous sarcophagus of King Tutankhamun. Today, lapis lazuli is still highly prized for its rich, royal blue colour.
This is one of the reasons we love using lapis lazuli in our jewellery and love it for both for its beauty and for its metaphysical properties. The stone is believed to bring inner peace and clarity of mind. It is also said to enhance creativity and intuition, making it a popular choice for artists and writers.
Lapis Source & Origin
But what makes lapis jewellery so unique and special? The main source of lapis lazuli is in the remote and rugged mountains of Afghanistan, where it has been mined for over 6,000 years. The best quality lapis comes from the Sar-i-Sang mine in the Badakhshan province, in where it is found in its purest and most vibrant form.
Its chemical composition is so complex that the geological conditions have to be just right for its formation. For this reason, lapis lazuli is mainly found in two places on Earth – Afghanistan and Chile. The value of lapis jewellery is determined by its colour and the intensity of the blue. The most valuable specimens exhibit a consistent, deep blue colour with little to no presence of white or grey calcite, which is the mineral that gives lapis its signature flecked appearance. The finest quality lapis lazuli is a rich, royal blue with specks of golden pyrite that create a beautiful and unique pattern. Interestingly, the colour of lapis lazuli is not a result of pigmentation, but rather the presence of sulphur deposits and other minerals such as lazurite, calcite, and pyrite. These minerals form in veins within limestone, and when polished, create the stunning blue of lapis.
The History of Lapis Lazuli
Aside from its use in jewellery, lapis lazuli has been highly valued in art and history. Its one of the oldest opaque stones in history. The ancient Egyptians used it in their paintings and as an inlay for their famous blue death masks, while the Greeks and Romans used it for various decorative purposes. It is also said that Cleopatra used ground lapis lazuli as a cosmetic to create her signature blue eyeshadow. In medieval Europe, lapis lazuli was believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. It was also used to make the colour ultramarine, which was the most expensive and sought-after pigment at the time. The rich blue colour of lapis lazuli was reserved for royalty and used in paintings of the Virgin Mary and other important religious figures.
Lapis Jewellery Lovers
For us, lapis lazuli holds a special place. Using it in various forms, from raw, unpolished stones to finely cut and polished gems. Its rich blue colour makes it such a versatile stone that we've paired with both white and yellow gold, providing a beautiful contrast and adding a pop of colour to any outfit.
